The old chapel is probably the most significant turf house in Núpsstaður. It is said that it was built on the remaining structure of a church dating from the 17th century.
According to "UNESCO" - A church was built at Núpsstaður in earliest Christian times, or at least sometime before 1200 AD.
Unfortunately many sites are mentioning the area of Núpsstaður as an UNESCO world heritage site. When you look exactly at the UNESCO website, Núpsstaður has been submitted by the National Museum of Iceland in 2011 but UNESCO hasn't still approved the site as world heritage site. So, it's still on the waiting list for recognition...
